How does vpn work?

Since the academic year 2009-2010, a new VPN infrastructure has been put in place. It is more flexible, easier to use, and does not require the installation of a “heavy” client on your computer.

What is VPN?

Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows you to meet the following needs, among others:
You want, from your home, to connect to a ULg machine inaccessible from outside the ULg (because of the protection of our network by firewalls) as, for example, the SAP servers, the base server bibliographic data ERL, Windows servers (Netbios).
You want, from your home, to connect to a server external to the ULg but whose access is reserved for computers in the ULg network (electronic periodicals, online databases such as Web of Science,.)

How does it work?

When you connect to the Internet (via ADSL or a modem via an access provider other than the SEGI-ULg), you receive a temporary IP address from this service provider (Belgacom, VOO.). This address is therefore not part of the addresses reserved for the ULg (139.165.x.x) and your computer is not recognized as part of the ULg network. You are therefore subject to the anti-intrusion protection placed at the entrance of our network (firewalls).
If you open a VPN connection when connected to the Internet, a secure “tunnel” is established between your computer and the SEGI VPN gateway. After login (using your username and your usual password), your computer receives a second IP address belonging to the ULg network. From then on, your computer is considered to be physically plugged into our network and the communications between your computer and the ULg network are encrypted.

How to use the VPN ULg from your computer?

Once your computer is connected to the internet, the ULg VPN is accessible from any web browser at the address.
You are then invited to enter your ULg registration number and password to identify yourself. Once done, press the “identification” button.
If this is your first use, you will need to accept the installation of “juniperClientSetup.cab” when requested.

Web bookmarks.

Once correctly identified, you will be directed to your personal VPN page. This includes a series of clickable links (arrow n ° 1), which you will access “as if you were inside the ULg network. If you need to consult other web pages that need to be “recognized as a ULg computer” (typically paid online resources, but not public sites), you can add your own bookmarks personalized by clicking on the “+” symbol indicated by the arrow n ° 2. They will be available again during your next connections to the VPN ULg, whatever the computer used, and visible only for you.

Free Web Consultation.

You can also access “as if you were in the ULg network” to any other URL that requires it. To do this, use the internal address bar, indicated by arrow # 1. Once the URL is retranscribed in this field, press the “browse” button to validate your choice.

Application Tunnels.

If you have to use the ULg VPN for purposes other than web consultation, for example for ssh connections for management purposes, the “Network Connect” tool is at your disposal. The “Network Connect” client will allow you to pass all your network traffic through the VPN gateway (IPSec tunnel).
To initiate this service, press the Start button next to “Network Connect.” If this is your first time using Network Connect, you will need to accept its installation when requested (as well as when customer updates). For any use beyond the first and once the client initialized, a small icon representing a padlock surmounted by two bubbles at the bottom right of your screen. The two bubbles will turn green for two seconds to signal that Network Connect is now functional.
